1. Explore the lake on a boat

You won’t be able to fully experience the magic of Lake Lavon if you don’t actually get out on the lake! That’s why boating at Lake Lavon is one of the top things to do in summer in the DFW area. Boating lets you take in all of Lake Lavon’s natural beauty, bond with your friends and family, and even try some high-octane watersports like wakeboarding or waterskiing. If you don’t have your own boat, you can always rent one from Woody’s on the Lake Boat Rentals at Collin Park.
2. Take a swim at a Lake Lavon park
The water in Lake Lavon is cool and refreshing, especially in the summer. If you’re out on a boat, you can jump right off into the lake, but Lake Lavon also has plenty of designated swimming areas. Collin Park’s swimming beach has plenty of room for kids to splash and adults to soak up the sun, as well as volleyball courts and picnic tables. Other popular Lake Lavon swimming spots include Pebble Beach, Little Ridge Park, Lavonia Park, and Avalon Park.
3. Reel in a trophy largemouth
Lake Lavon is a top-tier bass fishing destination that attracts both professional fishermen and casual anglers from all over the country. Fish love to hang out in the shady coves off Collin Park and Little Ridge Park, and you can also find them lurking in the rip-rap by the Lavon Dam, the 380 T Bridge, and the East Fork Trinity River Arm.
Peak fishing season on Lake Lavon is April to September, with trollers flocking to participate in weekly tournaments, but you can hook an exciting catch any time of year. The lake is most famous for its bass fishing, with largemouth bass, white bass, striped bass, and yellow bass all calling the lake home. Other species include crappie, catfish, shad, and sunfish.
4. Try hiking or horseback riding on the Trinity Trail

If you’re not a water person, there are plenty of Lake Lavon activities to enjoy on land. The Trinity Trail is a 25.5-mile multi-purpose trail that runs along the western shores of the lake. It provides stunning views of all of Lake Lavon’s habitats, from dense wooded areas to open grasslands to lakeside marshes, and it’s also home to the oldest sycamore tree in Texas. Horseback riders and hikers are welcome, although the trail is closed to wheeled vehicles.
5. Take a hunting trip
If you’re a hunter, Lake Lavon should be at the top of your list of things to do in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has multiple designated hunting areas around Lake Lavon that each offer unique game species and challenges. Waterfowl gather near the shady shoreline, rabbits scurry in the brush, and feral hogs roam the wooded areas. All hunters need a valid Lake Lavon hunting permit, and they must remain in the hunting zones and adhere to all Texas Parks and Wildlife Department regulations. Check with the Lake Lavon Corps of Engineers office before your trip, as hunting regulations can shift from year to year.
6. Go birdwatching
